Punta Gorda, Florida

The Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup makes it first stop on the 2008 tournament circuit in Punta Gorda, Fla., on April 25th–27th. The city has long been regarded as a vacation, retirement and fishing destination because of its location, where the Peace River meets Charlotte Harbor.

The importance of this western Florida venue is apparent to all Redfish Cup competitors. Those who do well in Punta Gorda go on to finish high on the money list at the end of the year.

Redfish Cup angler Travis Holeman took it one step further. "If you can finish in the top ten in Punta Gorda, you will definitely have a shot at Team of the Year," he said.

Judging from their 36.17-pound, three-day total last year, Al Keller and Bill Faulkner will know where to find and catch winning redfish at the Punta Gorda. But the challenge for these favorites will be leading each angler's new team this year. Keller has chosen Karl Zimmerman, and Faulkner has teamed up with Kevin Mihailoff for 2008.

But don't count out the Watts Brothers, for that matter, or sell short Mike Friday and Punta Gorda native Danny Latham, either. These two teams finished in second and third place, respectively, in the 2007 event.

But if consistency is king at Punta Gorda, go ahead and crown Craig Johnson and John Ochs. These former Team of the Year winners have delivered results on the weigh-in stage at each and every visit.
