PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was a game of cloak and dagger on Day One of the Redfish Cup event in Pensacola, Fla. Unwilling to show their hand, most teams that met with success were tight-lipped as they made their way to the weigh-in stage. But when the dust settled, Jeff Totten and Ozzie Lessinger stood atop the leaderboard with a whopping 14.77 pounds.
They were followed closely in second place by Craig Johnson and John Ochs with 14.49 pounds, Alex Suescun and Eric Taylor in third with 13.98 pounds, Tim Young and Jason Catchings in fourth with 13.87 pounds and Jeff Pope and Brandon Buckner in fifth with 13.75 pounds.
PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was a tough Day Two on the water for Redfish Cup anglers as they fought to make the top five and fish the final day. The community hole that yesterday produced most of the top weights was impacted by a slower tide, clearer waters and a crowd of boats double the size, making quality bites few and far between.
But for Craig Johnson and John Ochs, it was just what the doctor ordered.
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Jeff Pope and Brandon Buckner knew it was over when they heard the sound of a motor flipping on and a boat roaring off. The duo had been fishing near the always-dominant team of Craig Johnson and John Ochs all weekend, and if the competing team were already heading back toward the dock, they knew they were in trouble.
Their prediction was correct.
Johnson and Ochs brought in a 12.5-pound bag on the final day, crushing the competition and claiming their first Redfish Cup title. It was a long time coming for the pair, who have more top-five finishes than any team in Redfish Cup history, but had yet to take home top honors.
